eye makeup removerI just bought a new makeup remover - Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover, and so far I really like it. I haven’t tried a whole lot of different eye makeup removers, but this is my new favorite. I used to use L’Oreal Eye Makeup Remover, which was fine, but it didn’t remove my eye makeup that easily.Eating Disorders

Then I started getting free Clinique makeup removers as gifts-with-purchase. One of the Clinique makeup removers was great, but the other one actually clogged the pores of my skin near my eyelashes, and that caused problems with my eyes and contacts. The problem was pretty bad, and I wish I could remember the name of the product, since I would like to warn people about this.

Neutrogena Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover
I’ve been using this for a week, and am happy that it easily removes my eye makeup (including mascara), without causing any issues. It doesn’t sting or burn, and it doesn’t cause any problems with my eyes or contacts. It also doesn’t clog my pores when I get the product on my skin. It does contain one potential pore clogger, which hasn’t been a problem for me, and you are also supposed to rinse your face with water afterwards, thus washing away any product residue. I didn’t read the instructions on the bottle at first, but you are also supposed to shake the bottle before you use it! Since this is a drugstore product, the price is good, which is why I prefer this to the more expensive Clinique makeup remover.

Do you need to use an eye makeup remover?
While some cleansers work well enough to remove all your eye makeup, if you are using a more gentle cleanser, you may still have visible eye makeup left after washing your face. If that’s the case, I would recommend using a separate eye makeup remover. Do you have a favorite eye makeup remover?

uv indexIt wasn’t until a few years ago that I learned about the UV Index (a measurement of how hot and intense the sun gets on a given day). At the time, I thought the index went from 1-10, with 10 being the absolute hottest rating possible. Imagine my horror when I realized the UV Index is generally 11+ almost every day of the Las Vegas summer! The heat must have fried my brain because I’m a total sun-phobe, yet I cemented my plans on staying in Las Vegas by recently buying a condo.

While Vegas is a bit extreme since it’s a UV Index of 9 or higher half the year, most cities in the US see extreme UV ratings during the summer. You can check your city’s UV Index by entering in your zip code on the EPA website. The site also gives you a map of the UV Index of the entire US. Here is how I go to extremes to deal with the crazy high UV Index:

  • I try to avoid leaving the house before 6pm! Currently I’m self-employed, so unless I have a freelance photography job during the day, I generally don’t leave the house til 5 or 6pm. The sun is still out, so I still get to see daylight, yet avoid the hottest time of the day. I’m not a morning person, or otherwise I might get up super early, and then avoid being outside from 9am-5pm. When I get a job outside of the house, a night job would probably be ideal for me.
  • I keep most of the shades in the house drawn, and have curtains up on the windows. The hot sun can still come through the windows and while it can’t burn you, UVA rays can cause premature aging, and possibly skin cancer. When I move to my own condo, I’m going to look into having my windows UV tinted. I have no idea how much this costs!
  • I tinted my car windows with a UV coating to deflect the sun. Just because you’re in your car doesn’t mean the sun can’t harm you, so car window tinting adds an extra layer of protection.
  • If I have to go outside, I spend as little time outside as possible. I always wear SPF 30+ Zinc Oxide-based sunscreen, even at 6pm! If the sun is out, I have on sunscreen!
  • I always wear big sunglasses with UVA/UVB coating, and my next purchase will be big wraparound sunglasses, so that my crow’s feet get extra protection! I really don’t like hats, or else I’d wear a hat whenever I left the house as well.
  • I carry around sunscreen with me, so that I can reapply in case I have to be in and out of the sun all day (which of course I try to avoid at all costs).

Watch for end of season sales. End of season sales can give you amazing deals. The only drawback is they might not fit the coming season's weather. If this occurs all you have to do is incorporate the item into your wardrobe. For example: end of winter you will find lots of long sleeves for dirt cheap. Well Spring is the next season not summer, which means more rain and the occasional freak snowstorm. Also in the evening it will be nice to have some long sleeve shirts or sweaters to throw over a T-shirt. Just be intuitive while you're shopping the racks and think creatively. This will ensure a money-saving and more unique wardrobe.

Take advantage of the bad economy. Due to our shrinking economy many stores are offering great promotions and huge sales, in order to make ends meet. Though the economy going down is definitely a drawback, the sales can be used to the advantage of shoppers. Check out your local malls and see what kind of deals are being offered. You might be able to snag some "just in" clothing items for the price of last season's!

Shop with a thrifty eye. Be on the lookout for a great sale and check out the markdowns. The first thing I do when I enter a clothing store is peruse the clearance racks. I almost always can find something I like (or even love) for great prices. Don't just buy the item because it is on sale, but make sure you will wear it first. You won't be saving money in the long run if you're buying a clothing item that you will only wear once. Be smart and don't go over your budget.

Overall you don't have to spend a fortune to dress stylishly. Check online and in ads for coupons to save even more. Remember you don't always need the "it" brand. You can usually get almost the same item for half the money from other, less common retailers. If you follow these steps you will be shocked to see how much money you end up saving.

Good luck and happy hunting!
